J. Rachlin, Ph.D. Biological Sciences

Dr. Rachlin is committed to mentoring undergraduate students, both in courses and research, as they navigate their careers in biology at Lehman College. He has mentored 10 masters and 7 Ph.D. students. After completing his Ph.D. from New York University, he joined the faculty of Hunter College in the Bronx, which later became Lehman College in 1968. He is an active researcher in the field of aquatic ecology with special emphasis on fish and invertebrates in coastal and freshwaters of New York State; These studies have resulted in 70 peer reviewed publications. Dr. Rachlin is also on the editorial board of both the Northeastern Naturalist and the Urban Naturalist. His 53 years of research in waters of New York State, including The Hudson River and its Estuary, were recognized by the Environmental Consortium of Colleges and Universities in New York State at the Consortium’s 12th annual conference on November 7th, 2015, at Vassar College. He was awarded The Great Works Award, in honor of Thomas Berry, granted for a lifetime dedication to teaching and scholarship in the environmental field; with an emphasis on the region’s aquatic fish and invertebrate species. Dr. Rachlin is also a Fellow of the American Institute of Fishery Research Biologists, the Willi Hennig Society, the Linnean Society of London, and was recently elected as a Fellow of Sigma Xi.
