Biography

Leo Gonzalez

Dr. Leo Gonzalez Jr. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Counseling, Leadership, Literacy and Special Education (CLLSE) at CUNY Lehman College. He earned his B.A. in Psychology and M.S.Ed. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from St. John’s University and his Ph.D. in Counseling from Oregon State University. He is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC-D) in New York, a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) in California, and a National Certified Counselor (NCC).

Prior to joining the faculty at Lehman College, Dr. Gonzalez served in a variety of clinical and educational settings, including college counseling centers, the Percy Ellis SEEK Program at CUNY York College, substance use treatment, and private practice.

Dr. Gonzalez’s research examines the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), counselor education, and mental health practice. His scholarship focuses on AI literacy, counselor development, ethical integration of generative AI in counseling and counselor education, digital equity, and the application of natural language processing to mental health research. His work has been published in peer-reviewed counseling and interdisciplinary journals, and he has presented nationally on the implications of emerging technologies for counseling practice, supervision, and training.

Outside of his academic work, Dr. Gonzalez enjoys spending time with his family and two Maltipoos, exploring new coffee shops, and watching basketball.
