Time: 3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Location: Lehman Quad
Audience: Friend of Lehman, Staff, Students, Visitors
Why throw out your Halloween jack o’lanterns when you can smash them for a good cause? On Wednesday, November 4, Lehman College and the New York Botanical Garden will host their annual Pumpkin Smash, inviting Bronx residents to turn squash and leftover jack-o'-lanterns into something useful for the community—compost.
The free event, held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on the Lehman College quad, gives participants a chance to break apart pumpkins, squash, and gourds with mallets and send the remains off to be composted for use in local community gardens, green spaces, and parks. BYO pumpkin or whack one of the squashes brought over from the Botantical Garden’s Halloween displays.
The event offers residents a hands-on way to reduce waste while helping sustain the places their communities use and enjoy.
Along with learning about composting and food justice efforts in the neighborhood, squash-smashers can also take home edible heirloom pumpkins and tasty pumpkin recipes, sample pumpkin bread, and get creative with pumpkin crafts.
