Student Evaluation of Teaching and Learning (SETL)
Student evaluations of teaching are required by the Board of Trustees of the City University of New York. Student evaluations are used to improve teaching and learning. They capture feedback on course design, teaching practices, and the learning environment so that Lehman College can strengthen student learning and academic quality.
The current Lehman College Student Evaluation of Teaching and Learning (SETL) instrument (PDF) was developed by faculty, students, and administrators during Fall 2025 and approved by the Faculty Personnel and Budget (FP&B) Committee on February 10, 2026.
How SETL Results are Used (required content)
Lehman College uses SETL results to:
- Improve teaching and strengthen curricula
- Inform course and program improvements
- Support professional development for instructors (coaching, workshops, peer learning)
- Contribute to institutional improvement and assessment (program review, assessment processes, and accreditation reporting).
Examples of changes made from using SETL feedback:
- Earth, Environmental, and Geospatial Sciences (EEGS): redesigned GIS labs, adjusted instruction where content was unclear/overly technical, shifted assessments toward complex skills.
- Health Equity, Administration, and Technology (HEAT): Incorporated into annual faculty review for course changes and continuous improvement processes for the Department.
- Latin American and Latino Studies: Revised the curriculum and increased focus on student support.
- Management and Business Innovation (MBI): revised syllabi alignment, strengthened oral communication/ethical reasoning, introduced Excel/R/AI tools where instruction was flagged as outdated, embedded information literacy in BBA 204.
