ACS Appointment Highlights Mentoring, Student Success at Lehman

May 1, 2026

Patricia Gonzalez Periche, a doctoral lecturer in the Department of Chemistry, puts immense effort into mentoring chemistry majors—so much so that she was recently invited to serve on the American Chemical Society’s (ACS) Committee on Education Undergraduate Student Advisory Board.

In that national role, Periche will co-chair student programming for the ACS National Meeting in Spring 2027 in New Orleans, working with ACS staff and committee members to develop programming that supports student engagement, professional development, and strong scientific presentations.

“As I continue to get more involved with ACS, both at the local level in New York and nationally, I see the impact of this work, not only in advancing chemistry, but in creating meaningful experiences for students exploring careers in science,” she said. “I’m excited to get to work and to build bonds with a broader ACS network, while bringing new opportunities for our students.”

The appointment followed continued recognition for Lehman chemistry students under Periche’s guidance. The Chemistry Club, an ACS student chapter, received a Student Communities award at the 2026 ACS National Meeting in Atlanta, marking the third consecutive year the club has been recognized by ACS.

In addition, Periche recently accompanied six club members to Puerto Rico for El Festival de la Química, which brought together ACS student chapters, organizations, and universities from across Puerto Rico for hands-on demonstrations designed for the public. Lehman students explored the festival’s activities, learned from peers and participating groups, and contributed as volunteers.
