For five weeks this summer, Bronx middle school students made Lehman College their classroom as they strengthened academic skills and got an early taste of college life.

Students in the Bronx GEAR UP INSPIRES and THRIVES programs took part in The Bronx Institute’s Summer Institute, which combined academic enrichment with college and career preparation.

The program offered courses in Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) preparation, chemistry, physics, problem solving, and creative writing. Advisement sessions included financial literacy, career exploration, and the transition to high school.

Students also participated in workshops and field trips, including a visit to the New York Botanical Garden focused on plant ecology, horticulture, and the Bronx River.

“We remain committed to building connections and creating opportunities for our students to experience all that Lehman College has to offer,” said Professor Herminio Martinez, executive director of The Bronx Institute. “We want our students to see Lehman as a critical part of their community, and also as a place where they belong.”
