In a new artdaily interview, Professor of Art Melissa Brown spoke about “Window Shopping,” her new solo show at Manhattan’s Derek Eller Gallery. Her mixed-media works combine screen-printed photos with sections painted by hand to capture the mix of display, reflection, and day-to-day street life framed in store windows. Brown said she’s “more of a daydreamer than a shopper,” and described walking around the city, noting when a window caught her attention, then coming back later to paint a study on site. Along the way she chatted with shop owners and heard stories about family-run businesses and rent hikes. The images interrogate the moment when a store window display “strikes a core human desire that can only be satisfied by the material world,” she said—an experience she notes is quickly being replaced by ads that follow potential shoppers wherever they go.
