Planting the Seeds of Success

Hello everyone! My name is Jilsana Mohamed Bakry, and I am a double major in Biology and Adolescent Teacher Education at Lehman College. I would like to share some of the experiences that have shaped my journey at Lehman and the goals I hope to achieve in the future.
This semester, I had the opportunity to participate in a group research project on kale seed germination under the guidance of Dr. Jack Henning. Alongside my research team, I presented our findings in a poster presentation at the Student Scholars Conference at Lehman College. This experience strengthened my communication, presentation, and teamwork skills while giving me valuable exposure to scientific research and professional conferences.
Lehman College has provided me with many valuable resources and opportunities. Faculty mentors have guided me throughout my academic journey, and programs such as undergraduate research, student conferences, and scholarship opportunities have helped me develop both academically and professionally. I was recently pre-approved for the NOYCE Scholarship Master’s Program, which will support my preparation to become a STEM educator. I am especially grateful to Dr. Israel Pitts, Professor Tiffany DeJaynes, and Professor Celia Cruz for their guidance, encouragement, and support throughout the NOYCE Scholar application process. Their mentorship has helped me pursue my educational and career goals with confidence.
My future career goal is to become a certified middle and high school biology teacher. I plan to continue into a master's program in education through the NOYCE program, where I hope to inspire students to develop a love for science, encourage curiosity, and create engaging learning experiences in the classroom. I would also like to support students from diverse backgrounds and help increase interest in STEM education.
Lehman College has played an important role in helping me achieve my goals, and I am grateful for the opportunities and support I have received throughout my academic journey.
