UNDERSTANDING BACHELOR'S DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
This page is intended for incoming first-semester freshmen and provides a general overview of the requirements needed to complete a bachelor’s degree at Lehman College. These requirements include general education (Pathways), college option, major requirements, and electives that together help you reach the 120 credits required for graduation.
Incoming freshmen are required to meet with their assigned onboarding academic advisor before being enrolled into classes for their first semester. During the appointment, the advisor will review the student’s requirements, create a first-semester plan, and enroll the student into courses.
Learning Community Block Schedule
New incoming freshmen participate in a Learning Community Block through the First Year Initiative (FYI) Program, a pre-set full-time schedule designed for first-year students. These course clusters fulfill general education requirements and may align with your intended major, providing a structured start to your first semester at Lehman.
CUNY GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Below is an overview of the CUNY General Education (Pathways) requirements, including English Composition, Required Common Core, and Flexible Common Core. Review each section for more information.

Use the Global Search tool and select the appropriate college, term, and requirement designation to view available classes. Students can also review the Undergraduate Bulletin for a full list of courses that may satisfy these requirements.
Please note that some of these courses may be satisfied by major requirements. In addition, some requirements may have already been fulfilled by courses taken at a prior institution.
COLLEGE OPTION & WRITING INTENSIVE
The section below includes your Foreign Language, LEH courses, and Writing Intensive requirements. Review each section for more information.
Students must get permission from a Language Advisor to enroll in any foreign language class. Visit the Language Advising page for more information.
-
Students entering as freshmen must complete a foreign language sequence, that is, two levels of the same foreign language.
-
Transfer students without an associate's or bachelor's degree should consult with a Language Advisor to determine how many foreign language courses are needed.
-
Associate's degree and bachelor's degree holders are exempt from taking the foreign language requirement at Lehman College.
All Lehman students (except second-degree students) are required to complete up to two (2) LEH 35X courses (choose from LEH 351, 352, 353, 354, or 355). Consult with your assigned academic advisor or review DegreeWorks to determine how many LEH courses are needed.
Depending on your major, certain LEH courses may not apply toward your degree requirements. Use DegreeWorks or speak with your academic advisor to review your approved options.
When can you take LEH 35X courses?
You can only enroll in LEH 35X courses after you have:
-
Completed at least 45 credits
-
Declared a major
Students starting as freshmen will be enrolled in LEH 250 (First-Year Seminar), which satisfies one of the LEH requirements.
All Lehman students (except second-degree students) are required to take up to four (4) writing intensive courses. The number of writing intensive courses may vary by student. Consult with your assigned academic advisor or review your DegreeWorks to determine how many writing intensive courses are needed.
Click here for instructions on how to identify writing intensive courses.
Many LEH 35X courses are also designated as Writing Intensive, which may help students fulfill multiple requirements at the same time.
MAJOR, MINOR & GENERAL ELECTIVES
This section covers major, minor (optional), and general electives. These components allow students to focus on their field of study while also exploring additional academic interests and completing their remaining credits toward graduation.
Onboarding academic advisors and general academic advisors typically do not advise students on major-specific requirements. Students must connect with their major or departmental advisor for questions regarding their major. Students can also refer to DegreeWorks and the Undergraduate Bulletin for more information on major requirements.
Visit this page for a list of academic departments.
Choosing a minor is optional. Students can choose to declare a minor in any area of interest and should consult with a departmental advisor for more information about the minor. Students can also refer to DegreeWorks and the Undergraduate Bulletin for more information on minor requirements.
Visit this page for a list of academic departments.
General electives are courses taken outside of the major and general education requirements to help students reach the 120 credits required for graduation.
Students can use electives to:
- Explore personal interests
- Stay on track for full-time enrollment
- Complete additional courses to meet minimum liberal arts requirements if needed
⚠️ Important: General electives may be limited depending on your major. It is important to choose your electives carefully to ensure they apply toward your degree and do not negatively impact your financial aid eligibility.
For guidance on general electives, credits in residency, liberal arts requirements, GPA requirements, and other degree details, connect with your academic advisor via Navigate 360.
KEEP IN MIND: ACADEMIC MOMENTUM
Students are strongly encouraged to complete at least 30 credits per academic year (typically 15 credits in the fall and 15 credits in the spring) to stay on track for timely graduation. Maintaining academic momentum can help students complete their bachelor’s degree within four years and avoid delays that may impact financial aid eligibility or degree progress.
-
Students anticipating Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) must maintain at least 12 credits per semester to remain eligible.
-
Students anticipating Excelsior Scholarship must maintain at least 30 credits per academic year to remain eligible.
Timely degree completion looks like:
| Year | Credits | Total Credits Earned |
| 1st Year | 15 + 15 = 30 | 30 credits |
| 2nd Year | 15 + 15 = 30 | 60 credits |
| 3rd Year | 15 + 15 = 30 | 90 credits |
| 4th Year | 15 + 15 = 30 | 120 credits |
| COMPLETION OF DEGREE = 120 CREDITS | ||
