About The Bronx Institute

Professor Herminio Martinez describes the vision of The Bronx Institute (BI) as fostering excellence in education and learning for Bronx students from kindergarten through higher education by engaging administrators, teachers, parents, and students in high-quality programs that expand educational opportunities and support academic success.

The mission of The Bronx Institute is to advance research, leadership, and innovation that strengthen education and improve quality of life in The Bronx. The Institute serves as a forum for examining the educational, social, economic, and civic issues that affect the borough and other urban communities while promoting informed discussion and practical solutions.

As a community resource, The Bronx Institute collaborates with schools, colleges, nonprofit organizations, community groups, and public agencies to develop programs that expand educational opportunities for students and families. Through these partnerships, the Institute helps connect educational research with effective practices that benefit classrooms and communities.

The Bronx Institute focuses its work in two primary areas: Youth Development and Professional Development. Youth programs help students strengthen their academic skills, prepare for college, and explore future educational and career opportunities. Professional development programs provide educators with training, instructional resources, and evidence-based strategies that support student learning and professional growth.

The Institute also conducts research on educational policy and instructional practices that contribute to student achievement across the K–20 continuum. Findings from this work inform teacher training, workshops, summer institutes, and other professional learning opportunities designed to strengthen educational outcomes.

Through its academic partnerships and community engagement, The Bronx Institute supports initiatives that encourage college readiness, educational attainment, and lifelong learning. By bringing together educators, researchers, students, families, and community partners, the Institute works to strengthen educational opportunities and contribute to the continued growth and vitality of The Bronx.
