What We Do

ISSP writing tutors are available to support Lehman students with writing for any class, as well as projects outside of class, such as creative work or cover letters. Undergraduate and graduate students are welcome. You do not need a completed draft to meet with a writing tutor. Whether you’re just getting started or revising a draft, we’re eager to support you in your process.

Hours and Location

Writing tutors are based at the Lehman Tutoring Center in Old Gym Building, room 205, and are available online as well, via the Lehman Tutoring Center’s virtual tutoring platform (on Zoom).  During the Fall and Spring semesters, students can meet with writing tutors during the Lehman Tutoring Center hours of operation: Monday through Thursday, 10 AM – 7 PM, and Saturday 10 AM – 2 PM (online only).  Extended hours are offered during the lead-up to Finals Week, and during Finals.

Drop-In Writing Tutoring

Drop-ins are welcome!  Visit us in Old Gym 205 or online via our virtual platform during our hours of operation, Monday through Thursday 10 AM – 7 PM, and Saturday 10 AM – 2 PM (online tutoring only on Saturdays).
Note that students who visit us as drop-ins (without an advance appointment) are assigned to writing tutors on a first come, first served basis.  We cannot guarantee you will be able to meet with a writing tutor if you drop by without an appointment, but we will do our best to accommodate you.

If you visit us in person, you can work in the Old Gym 205 computer room until a tutor becomes available.  Our desk staff can also set up an appointment for you, so you’ll be able to meet with a writing tutor at the next opportunity, at a time that fits your schedule.

Advance appointments are available, on a one-time or weekly basis.  Visit us in Old Gym 205, drop by online, or use our Appointment Request Form to set up an advance appointment with a writing tutor.

Note that this same form is used to request appointments in advance with an Academic Coach or a Subject Tutor at the Lehman Tutoring Center, so be sure to indicate you’re requesting a Writing Tutor specifically.  After submitting your appointment request, you can generally expect to receive an email confirming your appointment within 1-2 business days.

We recommend weekly writing tutor appointments if you feel you would benefit from sustained writing support.  With weekly appointments, your writing tutor will get to know you and your course(s) better, so you’ll be able to work together more efficiently.  Don’t worry if you feel you might not have a paper to work on every week, as you can work with your writing tutor on writing assignments for ANY of your courses. Even if you don’t have a draft to look at together, you can have a fruitful session.  Indeed, one of the best times to meet with a writing tutor is when you don’t have a pressing deadline, so you can plan ahead.

If you tend to procrastinate, weekly appointments could be an excellent choice for you.  Many students find that meeting with the same writing tutor on a weekly basis provides a structure for getting assignments done on time.  You’ll find it easier to stay on track, as you can discuss upcoming deadlines with your tutor, break larger tasks into more manageable segments, and tackle them one by one.  Mountains are climbed one step at a time, and your weekly writing tutor—your “writing buddy”—can help you surmount the multiple writing challenges you’ll encounter across the semester.
