Information for Students

The Department of Latin American and Latino Studies offers an inter-disciplinary approach to the study of Latin America and the Caribbean, and to Latinos in the United States. An exciting variety of courses are offered. Faculty members in the Department are trained in different disciplines, but are united in their commitment to excellence in teaching and scholarship. Faculty members aspire to not only share substantive knowledge but to also strengthen students' analytical and expository skills.

The Department offers two majors and three minors. The majors are in Latin American Studies and Latino Studies. Minors are in Latin American Studies, Latino Studies, and Mexican and Mexican-American Studies. Many of the Department's courses meet CUNY’s General Education Program (Pathways) requirements. Both of the Department's majors are approved for students training to be teachers in New York State.
