Tambor y Caña, Escuela de Tambores Afrovenezolanos y Percusión Afrolatina (E.T.A.P.A.) are NYC-based drumming groups uniting Afro-Venezuelan immigrants from the Venezuelan states of Aragua, Maracuyi, and Carabobo. These organizations host events and workshops to inform participants about Afro-Venezuelan musical performance, sound, and dance, referencing the history of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, which brought over 100,000 African slaves to Venezuela from present-day Angola, Senegal, Gambia, Benin, Nigeria, and Congo.
This presentation will highlight the rhythmic traditions tied to the Afro-Venezuelan diaspora communities found in the coastal regions of Venezuela.
