Lehman College Presents Bronx Beat Week, a Three-Day Tribute to Hip Hop
Features performances, screenings, and the CUNY Beat Battle—judged by Grandmaster Melle Mel and Denzil Porter
THE BRONX, N.Y.— On Monday, April 27, Lehman College kicks off Bronx Beat Week, a three-day, public celebration of the borough’s contributions to hip hop and American culture, with a roster of events including music, dance, beat-making, film, and conversation.
Bronx Beat Week is an expansion of the annual CUNY Beat Battle series, now in its fourth year, and is set for Tuesday, April 28, at 5 p.m. in the Multimedia Center. Judges include hip hop legend Melle Mel (“The Message,” “White Lines”).
Monday, April 27:
- 12 p.m.— Lehman Dance Ensemble performs outside Music Building
- 4 p.m. — Live music, dance, and dance workshop in Music Building East Dining Room
Tuesday, April 28, 5 p.m. in the Multimedia Center, Carman Hall C39:
The Fourth Annual CUNY Beat Battle, with judges Grandmaster Melle Mel and Denzil Porter. Intercollegiate teams from across CUNY will have 45 minutes to create a new beat using samples provided by the judges.
Wednesday, April 29, 5 p.m.in the Recital Hall, Music Building Room 306:
Screenings of Mott Haven, directed by Kelleyann Royce-Giron and Graffiti Nation, directed by Handal Abdelrahim, followed by a panel discussion with the filmmakers and J.C. Hall, pioneer of Hip Hop Expressive Arts Therapy. Location: R
All events are free and open to the public. Photo ID is required for campus entry.
