Fitness or Fad? Brad Schoenfeld Explains it All

One of the most highly-cited researchers in his field, Professor of Exercise Science Brad Schoenfeld is increasingly a familiar name in mainstream fitness coverage, often helping journalists turn research—and sometimes hype—into clear advice for everyday exercisers.

This month alone, he has contributed to several health segments on NPR and his expertise framed a recent New York Times piece on keeping workout routines effective. GQ sought him out for his opinion on the cold-plunge trend. Drawing on his research analyses, he warned that cold water immersion can “blunt the hypertrophic response” and counteract efforts to build muscle. The Washington Post cited his opinion on a new resistance-training study, highlighting his point that “within broad limits” people can build similar muscle with light or heavy loads.

Schoenfeld sees these interviews as a chance to translate research into recommendations. “I welcome opportunities to share my perspective with the media,” he said. “It is an effective means of reaching the broader public, who can make informed training choices, achieve better results, and maintain long-term adherence.”

What’s more, his mission to separate evidence-based fundamentals from fads is timelier than ever. “A large portion of fitness guidance is derived from social media and gym culture, where oversimplification and misinformation are common,” he said. “That’s why it is essential to communicate established knowledge and existing uncertainties.”
