Members of the New York State Court of Appeals had an opportunity to engage with the Lehman College community at a special event on Tuesday March 10, “An Evening with the Court of Appeals." The evening featured a Q&A with six of the seven judges, moderated by Lehman College Special Counsel Bridget Barbera.

“One of the most meaningful aspects of the panel was seeing how diverse the Court of Appeals is today,” Barbera said. “The judges represent a wide range of backgrounds and life experiences, and some are first-generation Americans, like many Lehman students. This event allowed our students to hear from judges who sit on the highest court in the State of New York, who showed them that a career in law can be more than a dream—it is attainable.”

Chief Judge Rowan D. Wilson, Judge Jenny Rivera, Judge Michael J. Garcia, Judge, Judge Anthony Cannataro, Judge Shirley Troutman, and Judge Caitlin J. Halligan offered a look into the operations of the state’s highest court and provided insight to students considering careers in law.

For Lehman senior Prince Boateng, an aspiring attorney who posed a question to the panel, the experience had a profound impact.

“I found myself with an unexplainable form of nervousness, maybe because my career was staring back at me. You know, being a lawyer, you speak in front of a judge and get an answer, but I had six judges staring at me, and an audience.”
