Herbert H. Lehman College, established in 1968 as an independent unit of the City University of New York, took over the campus that since 1931 had served as the Bronx branch of Hunter College. Originally, only women students attended, taking their first two years of study at the Bronx campus and then transferring to Hunter's Manhattan campus to complete their undergraduate work
Fordham University was founded in 1841 as St. John's College by the Right Reverend John Hughes, later to become the city's first Roman Catholic archbishop. Its first president, John McClosky, became the nation's first cardinal. The Jesuits bought the college in 1846. St. John's College was reestablished as a university in 1907, and became Fordham University.
Hostos Community College was originally created to address the requests of Latino leaders who urged the establishment of a college to serve the needs of the South Bronx.
Bronx Community College was established in 1957 and moved to its current location in 1973. Beginning with the fall 1973 semester, operations were moved to the present 50-acre site overlooking the Harlem River when the Dormitory Authority of the State of NY acquired the former NYU University Heights campus.
