Health & Safety

Your child’s safety is our top priority—and that starts with our staff. Every team member at More Than a Camp is carefully selected, thoroughly screened, and trained to meet the highest standards of care.

Before the summer begins, all staff complete comprehensive background checks and reference verifications. Our camp ensures each counselor receives hands-on training in child supervision, emergency response, and abuse prevention.

We don’t just teach policies—we model them. From daily check-ins to on-site supervision by program directors and camp administrators, our staff are supported and held accountable to ensure a safe, positive environment for every camper.

Every camper’s well-being is supported by a dedicated on-site Health Director who oversees all medical care and safety protocols at camp. From daily wellness checks to emergency preparedness, our team ensures that every camper is cared for with professionalism and compassion.

In compliance with Health Code Article 48, campers are responsible for self-administering their medications. Our Health Director and trained staff provide guidance, supervision, and secure storage to make this process safe and manageable for every child. In addition, we also have an Off-Site Medical Inspector who reviews immunization records before the camp season begins and maintain clear protocols to protect the health of all campers.

Whether it’s a scraped knee, a moment of discomfort, or managing medications, our health team is there—calm, attentive, and ready to respond. At Lehman College Summer Camp, parents can ensure that every camper’s health is carefully managed by qualified staff in a structured, supportive environment.

At Lehman College Summer Camp, safety is built into every moment. Our emergency protocols cover daily routines, severe weather, and unexpected situations, ensuring campers are protected at all times.

In line with Health Code Article 48, campers who self-administer medications are fully supported. Medications are securely stored, and staff provide guidance and supervision so each child’s health needs are met safely during drills or real emergencies.

Campers participate in age-appropriate drills to respond calmly, while staff are rigorously trained in emergency response, first aid, and child supervision. Every scenario is carefully planned and practiced, from building evacuations to severe weather, creating a culture of preparedness. The Lehman Public Safety Team works closely with camp leadership, providing on-campus support, rapid response, and additional expertise to ensure every situation is handled efficiently and safely.

With thoughtful planning, skilled supervision, and the support of trained campus safety professionals, families can feel confident that kids are safe, supported, and free to enjoy every summer moment.

*Mandatory Fire Drills take place on the second day of each session. (7/7, 7/21, 8/4)

Every camper, whether just learning to float or mastering their strokes, is guided by a team of Red Cross certified lifeguards, Water Safety Instructors, and our Summer Camp Aquatic Director. In addition to their Aquatic certifications, our team is fully CPR and First Aid certified.

Lehman is home to the only Olympic-sized pool in the entire Bronx! With the biggest pool, comes even a bigger responsibility in the aspect of safety. Families should know that surrounding spaces are inspected daily, and safety equipment is always within reach. Staff are fully trained in emergency procedures, rescue drills, and first aid scenarios so they can respond confidently and calmly to any situation.

ALL SKILL LEVELS ARE WELCOMED!

Instruction is hands-on and tailored to each child’s skill level in the water. Our swim program combines learning, confidence-building, and fun. Each splash, stroke, and dive happens in a controlled, structured environment designed to challenge kids while keeping them completely safe.

In partnership with the NYC Department of Education’s Office of Food & Nutrition Services, we provide free breakfast, lunch, and snacks through the School Meals program.

Every meal is carefully prepared to meet NYC Health Code Article 48 and our nut-free policy, ensuring a safe and nourishing experience for every camper. Camp staff are trained in food safety and allergy awareness, giving families confidence while kids stay fueled and hydrated throughout the day.

Refillable water stations are available in each campus building on the campgrounds.

Nutrition provided to campers is safe, reliable, and nourishing, giving parents peace of mind while campers focus on fun and growth.

In full alignment with Health Code Article 48, we maintain age-based staff-to-camper ratios tailored for classroom, physical, and aquatic activities.

Our staff-to-camper ratio is as follows:

At Lehman College Summer Camp, campers’ safety begins at the gates. We maintain strict protocols and collaborate with the Public Safety team of Lehman College to ensure that every child is only released to authorized guardians and that visitors are carefully monitored.

  • ID Verification: All parents, guardians and visitors must present government-issued identification at check-in.
  • Authorized Pick-Up: Only individuals listed on the official Lehman College Campus Access List are permitted to enter the campus for pick up. Any changes must be communicated in writing directly to our Camp Director to be updated.
  • Visitor Sign-In: Every camper sign in and out is closely monitored by staff. Our procedures are designed to be efficient, secure, and consistent, giving parents confidence that their child is always accounted for. Our camp staff are trained to enforce these protocols with care and professionalism, balancing safety with a welcoming environment.

For everyone’s safety and convenience, parking at Lehman College Summer Camp is limited to active drop-off and pick-up ONLY. All vehicles must enter through Gate 8 on Bedford Park Boulevard.

We appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe, organized, and efficient system for all campers and families.

Lehman College Summer Camp operates with full compliance under NYC Health Code Article 48 and all Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) regulations. Our facilities, programs, and procedures undergo regular inspections to ensure the highest standards of safety, cleanliness, and care.

We believe families deserve clarity at every step. Parents are kept informed through consistent communication about camp operations, safety updates, and any health-related notices required by the city.

Our commitment to transparency means you can always trust that your child’s wellbeing—and your peace of mind—come first.
