Pumpkin Smash
Wondering what you should do with your jack-o’-lanterns after Halloween? Bring them to Pumpkin Smash and, well, smash them!
Since 2014, Pumpkin Smash is an annual event originally developed by the NYC Compost Project and hosted by Lehman College that brings together many different elements of environmental sustainability: education and outreach, composting and recycling, food and nutrition – to name a few. Pumpkin Smash is a community event open to everyone.
Please join us annually in the Lehman College Quad, the first Wednesday of November from 3:30 – 5:00 pm, rain or shine. Come for free food (some of it featuring pumpkin), learn about environmental sustainability issues and learn about Lehman College clubs and community environmental groups.
Come and throw your pumpkins off the platform on the upper quad onto the target below or hurl it across the quad in the giant slingshot! Smashed pumpkin is collected and composted onsite – an environmentally friendly alternative (which creates rich compost) to landfill disposal (which produces methane gas, a potent greenhouse gas).
Don’t have a jack-o’-lantern? Come to Pumpkin Smash and smash one of the pumpkins supplied by the NY Botanical Gardens in the Bronx! Participants are welcome to take one (or more) of the magnificent heirloom edible pumpkin varieties home and explore the world of pumpkin-based cuisine. Or take home one (or more) of the otherworldly inedible varieties home as decoration. (Be sure to drop it off at one of the food scrap drop off sites when done for composting.)
We hope you can join us!
Pumpkin Smash, first Wednesday each November, 3:30 – 5:00 pm, Upper Quad Area, Lehman College, 250 Bedford Park Blvd. West, Bronx, NY 10468-1589.
