The Bronx has a new option for health and wellness services thanks to The Bronx Community Health Hub, a partnership with Lehman College and community advocate Melissa Baker that officially opened its doors on September 8.

Located near Crotona Park, the Hub expands access to care for Bronx resident with free health and wellness services and mental health support while creating hands-on clinical training opportunities for Lehman students.

Services will be provided by Lehman students and will include asthma education and screening; hearing screening; mental health assessments; and basic health screenings, including blood pressure, pulse oximetry, blood glucose, and body mass index (BMI) checks.

The Health Hub also will offer exercise workshops, with programming specifically designed to support older adults. Nutrition workshops are planned for the future.

Elgloria Harrison, dean of the School of Health Sciences, Human Services, and Nursing, said the Hub addresses a growing need for community-based clinical placements for students.

“If you can't find it, then you make it,” she said of creating new clinical rotation opportunities, noting that many Lehman graduates go on to serve the communities in which they train.

The Hub is a culmination of work that began during the pandemic, when Baker partnered with Lehman students and community organizers to connect communities with essential services. “My dream was to take that health hub model and be able to do it in the community on a grander scale,” she said, describing how the space grew into a full-service community hub.

Both Harrison and Baker hope the Hub will become a long-term training site for future healthcare providers and serve as a model for similar initiatives across the Bronx.

The Health Hub will initially operate one day a week on Tuesdays throughout September—Sept. 8, 15, 22, and 29—from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with client services starting at 9 a.m. Beginning in October, the Hub will expand to two days a week, with services offered Tuesdays and Fridays starting the week of Oct. 6.
