As she celebrates her bachelor’s degree, Arlene Ramsudh adds another chapter to her family’s Lehman legacy, joining her two sisters as a graduate of the College’s nursing program.

First-generation Guyanese immigrants, Ramsudh and her sisters Rosanna and Andrea all enrolled in the Adult Degree Program, each with her eyes on a nursing career. Eldest sister Rosanna started first, in 2015, soon followed by Andrea; they earned their BSNs in 2020 and 2021, respectively.

Back in Guyana, Rosanna Ramsudh had considered nursing, but ultimately chose another path. Years later in the U.S., she and her sister Andrea were encouraged by their aunt, also a nurse, to take a Certified Nursing Assistant course.

“Working within the hospital setting, alongside nurses and taking care of patients firsthand solidified my choice to become an RN,” Rosanna said. Both she and Andrea are now float nurses at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, where they supplement the needs of various practice areas.

Before immigrating, Arlene Ramsudh had also thought about a nursing career, but life had other plans. Her interest grew as she witnessed her sisters’ educational and career trajectories in the U.S., and hands-on experience as a patient care technician confirmed it was her calling.

“These experiences strengthened my passion for nursing and motivated me to further my education, develop my clinical skills, and pursue a career where I can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives,” Arlene said.

Although her sisters’ positive experiences helped introduce her to Lehman, Ramsudh said she chose the College because of its strong nursing program and the academic and professional foundation it offered.

“The program has challenged me to grow both personally and professionally while preparing me with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to succeed in nursing,” she said.

With such an uncommon level of mutual experience, the three sisters offer each other a level of support they can get nowhere else. “I think our relationship has become more empathetic,” said Rosanna Ramsudh—“navigating work, school, and personal life, we have all been there at some point.”

“We have a shared passion and purpose and that strengthens our bond even more,” Arlene added. “It is an honor to extend ourselves to care for others.”

While all three Ramsudh sisters are now Lehman alumnae, Tuesday’s ceremony will not be their last. Arlene’s 21 year-old son is currently a Lehman student, and Rosanna will be returning this coming fall to earn a Family Nurse Practitioner advanced certificate.

“Being part of a family where we have all pursued an education at the same institution and career gives me a strong sense of pride, support, and inspiration,” Arlene said.
