About the Program

The 36-42 credit program leads to an M.S.Ed. degree in Early Childhood Education (Birth-Grade 2), general education. The program leads to initial and professional certification in New York State and are designed for candidates who have received no previous certification in early childhood but may have certification in a related area, in keeping with the State's emphasis on dual certification.

The program is designed to prepare reflective practitioners in urban early childhood settings. Our Early Childhood Graduate Program is nationally approved and accredited. We are committed to preparing competent, qualified, ethical, and reflective practitioners for service in diverse communities who believe in promoting care, justice, and equity in urban settings. Our students work in infant and child care settings, Head Start programs and in our public and private school systems, in Pre-kindergarten, Kindergarten, First and Second grades.

The 39-45 credit program leads to an M.S.Ed. degree in Early Childhood Education: Integration of Bilingual Extension (Birth-Grade 2), general education. The program leads to initial and professional certification in New York State and are designed for candidates who have received no previous certification in early childhood but may have certification in a related area, in keeping with the State's emphasis on dual certification.

The program is designed to prepare reflective practitioners in urban early childhood settings. Our Early Childhood Graduate Program is nationally approved and accredited. The Bilingual Extension of the Initial or Professional Certificate enables one to teach effectively in bilingual settings. The requirements for the Initial or Professional Certificates must be fulfilled before a Bilingual Extension can be issued. In addition, the Bilingual Education Assessment (BEA) exam is required.

Admission Requirements & Deadlines

We take students each fall semester.

Applications are accepted between April 1st and April 15th for the fall semester of the respective year.

To apply, the following are required:

  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university.
  • Official Transcripts from all universities attended.
  • If the applicant attended a university outside of the US, these transcripts need to be evaluated by a Lehman-approved agency. Learn more.
  • A GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Two letters of recommendation.
  • An essay in English outlining career goals (500 words). Please state in the essay the sequence applicant is applying for.
  • Students interested in the Bilingual Extension certificate must submit an essay in Spanish also outlining career goals.
    (An interview might be scheduled upon faculty request.)
