Lehman College Earth Day 2022

Earth Day 2022 at Lehman College, Wednesday, April 13, 2022, 3:30 – 5 pm. Location: Campus-level Quad area

Earth Day at Lehman College returns in-person and outdoors for 2022! Please join the Student Government Association (SGA) and the campus Sustainability Council for a somewhat-early Earth Day celebration at Lehman College! Learn about various environmental sustainability efforts at Lehman College:

Plastics Reduction/Elimination: Non-recyclable, single-use plastic in the environment is a hazard that will affect natural ecosystems for years/decades to come. If single-use plastics can be eliminated by large organizations (like CUNY and SUNY), the positive environmental impact can be significant. We are now at the beginning of this effort. Learn what this effort involves and what your role is, as a member of the Lehman College community - - and the environment.

Food Justice Program: Food Systems are complex webs having operational, financial, social and political aspects that play foundational roles in public health. Students in the Food Justice Program will be present to describe their work (including the Lehman College community garden 2022) and hopefully inspire others to incorporate an awareness of food justice issues into their daily lives.

Herbert H. Lehman Food Bank: meet the staff and volunteers who run the Herbert H. Lehman Food Bank. The Food Bank provides packaged foods and fresh produce to Lehman College students in the Student Life Building. In honor of Earth Day, the Food Bank is asking members of the Lehman College community to donate reusable grocery bags at the April 13 event.

Voter Registration: Prevention of environmental destruction goes far beyond changing individuals behaviors and actions (e.g. recycling, composting, etc.). Elected representatives on the federal-, state- and local levels have the power to shape policy that has direct and indirect, positive and negative impacts on the environment. Voting is an individual behavior change that will help the environment. Representatives from Campus Life will be on hand to guide you through the voter registration process.

American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative at Lehman College: learn about this important health initiative at the College.

Composting: Composting is the natural process of breaking down organic (i.e. once living) materials into a useful, valuable product that has a number of important, positive environmental impacts. Students will be on hand to demonstrate composting operations at Lehman College. Bring your food-preparation scraps from home to become part of the process!

Sustainable cooking classes: Students interested in learning the basics of delicious, healthy and sustainable cooking are can sign up for cooking classes to be conducted in the Gillet Food Lab after spring break (specific dates to be determined). Classes will include a presentation on sustainable approaches to cooking. Please contact Campus Sustainability Council members Craig Rothman (craig.rothman@lehman.cuny.edu) or Ilona Linins (Ilona.linins@lehman.cuny.edu) to sign up.
