Writing Across the Curriculum

Assignment Assessment Checklist

In assessing your own assignments, it may help to ask yourself the following questions, adapted from John Bean’s Engaging Ideas: The Professor’s Guide to Integrating Writing, Critical Thinking, and Active Learning in the Classroom.

  • Content: What information or material do you expect students to include in this assignment? Are these expectations clearly articulated to students?
  • Genre: Does this assignment ask students to produce writing in a specific genre, such as the formal academic argument or the personal essay? If so, are these expectations made clear in the assignment?
  • Audience: Does the assignment provide some information about the intended audience for this writing? What role do you expect the student to assume as the creator of this text? And are these assumptions transparent or merely assumed?
  • Clarity of Instruction: Does the assignment give students a clear description of the task they are to complete? Does the assignment explain the process students are to follow to complete this assignment effectively? Are the basic formatting requirements of the assignment clearly articulated?
